HL Deb 25 April 1988 vol 496 c110WA
Baroness Faithfull

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What impact the proposed closure of the secure unit at Redhill will have on the number and availability of secure places in the South East of England.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health and Social Security (Lord Skelmersdale)

The closure of the secure unit at Redhill will involve the loss of eight secure places for boys. While all local authorities have access to the national network of secure facilities, the main impact of the closure of Redhill will fall on the London boroughs. The London Boroughs Children's Regional Planning Committee have been considering what steps might be taken to compensate for the loss of the secure places at Redhill. Since the intention to close the unit was announced in June 1986, officials have been engaged in discussions with the LBCRPC about the implications for closure for the London boroughs. The next meeting is scheduled for 6th May, when proposals for the future will be discussed.
