HC Deb 20 April 1988 vol 131 cc483-4W
38. Dr. Reid

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will announce new controls to restrain development pressures in southern England.

Mr. Waldegrave

We are pursuing a range of policies designed to encourage development in other parts of the country, particularly the inner cities. But provision for economic growth and new housing will still need to be made in southern England. It is the job of the planning system to ensure that necessary development is accommodated in ways which do not conflict with our policies for the green belt and the protection of the countryside.
