HC Deb 20 April 1988 vol 131 cc470-1W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what the actual and percentage changes in employment for the years 1977 and 1987 were in (i) Yorkshire and Humberside and (ii) Don Valley constituency in the following main industry groups:(a) mining, (b) manufacturing, (c) construction, (d) distribution and leisure, (e) financial services and (f) public and other services.

Mr. Lee

The available information is as follows:

Employees in Employment in Yorkshire and Humberside Region Changes in the levels of employment between June 1977 and June 1987

Construction -16,000 -15.2

The available employee estimates for parliamentary constituencies are from censuses of employment taken in September 1981 and September 1984. An industry breakdown is not available for the earlier year, but, overall, the estimated number of employees in employment in the Don Valley constituency showed a reduction of 2,700, or 12 per cent., between the two census dates.

Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give for each standard region the most recent figures which are available showing the annual change in (i) the number of employees in employment and (ii) the number of full-time equivalent employees in employment.

Mr. Lee

There is insufficient detail in the quarterly employment estimates to form the basis of a calculation of a full-time equivalent series. The available information is as follows:

Employees in employment Changes in the levels of employment between December 1986 and December 1987

All All Part time employees
South East 40 107 40 149

North West -7 12 11 4
North 4 10 7 13
Wales 1 7 2 8

The labour force survey provides information on a different basis from which can be calculated the person hours usually worked by employees. The changes between spring 1986 and spring 1987 are shown in the following table.
