To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if there are any plans to extend the Tyneside Metro to Sunderland; and if he will make a statement.

I understand that the Tyne and Wear passenger transport authority and executive are considering the possibility of extending the Tyneside Metro to Sunderland, but no proposals have yet been put to my Department.
