HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 cc290-1W
91. Mr. Wallace

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance Her Majesty's Government have offered to India as a result of the famine in Rajasthan.

Mr. Chris Patten

In response to the 1987 monsoon failure, in Rajasthan and elsewhere, we have contributed :

  • £3 million to the Government of India/UNICEF water and sanitation programme;
  • £250,000 to Christian Aid for village tubewells;
  • £250,000 to Save the Children Fund and £53,000 to Oxfam for their respective drought relief programmes.

We are also considering a major bilateral village well drilling project.

All these projects involve Rajasthan, though not exclusively.
