HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 c291W
92. Sir Russell Johnston

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will now reconsider the provision of development assistance to Kampuchea.

Mr. Chris Patten

I see no reason at the present time to change our stance on aid to Cambodia. The Government's view is that, while it would be wrong in principle to give development aid to the current regime in Phnom Penh, we are nevertheless prepared to consider providing humanitarian assistance in the context of an internationally-organised relief effort. In addition, we shall continue to provide assistance for Cambodians seeking refuge in the camps along the Thai-Cambodian border.
