HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 c285W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements have been made to allow the Guernsey police and the States of Jersey police access to the police national computer.

Mr. Hurd

The Guernsey police and the States of Jersey police have always been able to obtain information from, and to provide information for, the police national computer through individual United Kingdom forces at the discretion of the chief constable concerned. These arrangements have recently been reviewed, following requests by Guernsey police and the States of Jersey police. With the support of the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Association of Chief Police Officers (Scotland). it has been agreed that these forces should henceforth have direct access to the PNC, through terminals situated in the islands. This facility, which will enable the forces to obtain information needed to carry out their duties and to enter information which may assist United Kingdom forces, will be subject to the same conditions as regards the protection of PNC information as apply to all other PNC users.
