§ Mr. RentonAbout 40 letters have been received from members of the public, either direct or through hon. Members, since the announcement on 11 February 1987 that the new form of British passport would be introduced286W from July 1988. In responding to concerns expressed by some correspondents we have made it clear that, although in a common format agreed in 1981 with other member states of the European Community, the new machine readable British passport remains a national one issued under the royal prerogative.
