HC Deb 18 April 1988 vol 131 c321W
Mr. Oppenheim

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the per capita spending on primary and secondary education in each school board area.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The table, which has been compiled from local authority financial returns, gives information on current expenditure per pupil in primary and secondary schools in each education authority in 1986–87, the latest year for which information is available.

£s at out-turn prices
Region Primary Secondary
Borders 1,091 1,601
Central 961 1,651
Dumfries and Galloway 946 1,713
Fife 1,021 1,706
Grampian 1,021 1,725
Highland 1,033 1,622
Lothian 1,033 1,846

Information about individual schools is not held centrally. The School Boards (Scotland) Bill now before Parliament will establish a separate board for each education authority school; each board will have the right to receive information on expenditure related to the school.
