asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (a) how many males are currently being held in police cells, (b) how many females are currently being held in police cells and (c) how many of the totals were sentenced prisoners for all police districts of England and Wales.

On 23 October 1987, the number of prisoners being held in police cells in all police areas in England and Wales was 1,268 males and 30 females. Information relating to the numbers of sentenced prisoners in police cells is incomplete but of the 1,142 prisoners held by or on behalf of the Metropolitan police, 74 were sentenced.
