§ Mr. John PattenOn 23 October 1987, the number of prisoners being held in police cells in all police areas in 21W England and Wales was 1,268 males and 30 females. Information relating to the numbers of sentenced prisoners in police cells is incomplete but of the 1,142 prisoners held by or on behalf of the Metropolitan police, 74 were sentenced.
