Mr. Parry

asked the Attorney-General what is his latest estimate of the cost to public funds of the court actions designed to prevent publication of Mr. Peter Wright's book, "Spycatcher", and the various related actions, civil and criminal.

The Solicitor-General

The total amount of costs expended to date, including costs in proceedings against certain newspapers and others for criminal contempt of court, is about £314,500.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Attorney-General if he will state the total cost to date involved by Her Majesty's Government in legal action in the United Kingdom and abroad in trying to stop the publication of the book "Spycatcher".
