HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 cc815-6W
Mr. John Morris

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what assessment has been made by Her Majesty's Government of the effect on jobs of imposing full sanctions against South Africa.

Mr. Alan Clark

No current assessment has been made, but when an exercise was undertaken last year our best estimate was that about 90,000 full-time job equivalents may be involved in the export of goods and services to South Africa. United Kingdom jobs are also involved in trade with neighbouring southern African countries which transit South Africa and in those United Kingdom industries which depend on imports from South Africa.
