§ 45. Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the operation of the single European Act in European Economic Community decision making.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe Single European Act entered into force on 1 July. By extending the use of qualified majority voting it will make it easier to secure the adoption of measures needed to complete the single market in goods and services, a longstanding United Kingdom objective. Its main effect so far has been to enable a common position to be reached by the Council on standards for vehicle emissions, a measure supported by the United Kingdom, which was previously blocked by the unanimity requirement.
