asked the Secretary of State for Social Services where the leaflets and application forms for the new funeral payments will be displayed.

The new arrangements for payment for funeral expenses under the social fund were introduced on 6 April 1987. Copies of an integrated leaflet and application form are available in DHSS local offices and offices of Registrars of Births, Marriages and Deaths. A leaflet which draws attention to social fund funeral payments and other social security benefits which are available, in appropriate circumstances, to bereaved people, is displayed in DHSS local offices and main Post Offices.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how he intends to inform housing benefit and family income supplement claimants that they can now claim the new funeral payments.

I refer the hon. Member to the answer which I have given today to her other question about funeral payments. Additionally, the family income supplement leaflet and the letter which is sent to notify the amount of benefit awarded draw attention to the fact that help from the social fund may be available. Leaflets for the reformed housing benefit and the new family credit schemes will carry a similar message from next April.
