HC Deb 21 October 1987 vol 120 c742W
Sir Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of the armed forces who have trained in East Africa have now contracted AIDS.

Mr. Freeman

It is not my Department's policy to disclose information on individual medical cases.

Sir Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether, in view of the serious risk of AIDS infection, he will reconsider the use of training facilities in East Africa; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

AIDS is a worldwide problem. I see no need to reconsider the use of training facilities in East Africa, which are of great value. I am satisfied that the arrangements for briefing service units proceeding abroad, which cover AIDS as well as other health hazards, are adequate.
