HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 cc513-4W
32. Mr. Sackville

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many job clubs have been opened in 1987.

Mr. Lee

Seven hundred and seventy eight job clubs have opened between 1 January and 30 October 1987. This brings the total to 1,078.

67. Mr. Barry Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the progress of job clubs.

Mr. Lee

Job clubs have proved a very effective means of helping long-term unemployed people to find the jobs they want. In the current financial year to the end of September 1987, 47,664 people had passed through job clubs. Of these 25,931 (54.4 per cent.) found work and a further 6,424 (13.5 per cent.) took up a place on the community programme, a training scheme or the enterprise allowance scheme.

79. Mr. Dykes

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the work of the job clubs established so far.

Mr. Lee

I refer my hon. Friend to my reply today to my hon. Friend the Member for the Isle of Wight (Mr. Field).
