HC Deb 17 November 1987 vol 122 c516W
56. Mr. Barry Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment whether he has any proposals to seek to remedy the shortage of capacity in the budget hotel sector.

Mr. Lee

I am not aware of any general shortage of supply of low-priced and medium-priced accommodation in England, but there is a need for more good quality budget hotel capacity, particularly in strategic locations such as London and near to the main motorway network, to cater for future tourist demand. The English tourist board is encouraging private sector investment in new and improved budget hotel capacity. In appropriate cases, the board may also be able to consider section 4 financial assistance to encourage such developments.
