§ Mr. Peter BottomleyIn a recent small-side survey the transport and road research laboratory found that one in 36 drivers was faced with a difficult decision about whether to proceed once traffic lights had started to change. Of those drivers who decided to jump a red light, it appeared that 50 per cent. could in practice have stopped safely. The percentage of drivers crossing lights after they have started to change varied widely between sites. Further research is now in hand on conditions at signalled junctions, and on factors affecting driver behaviour.
