HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 cc264-5W
Mr. McTaggart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the ratio of prison officers to prisoners on each Scottish prison.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The information is set out in the table.

Establishment Ratio of prison officers: inmates
Aberdeen 1:2.10
Barlinnie 1:3.11
Barlinnie Special Unit 1:0.54
Castle Huntly 1:2.79
Cornton Vale 1:1.21
Dumfries 1:1.39
Dungavel 1:2.80
Edinburgh 1:2.04
Friarton 1:1.58
Glenochil 1:1.82
Greenock 1:1.47
Inverness 1:1.35
Longriggend 1:2.09
Low Moss 1:3.49
Noranside 1:1.94
Penninghame 1:2.77
Perth 1:1.99
Peterhead 1:0.74
Polmont 1:2.36
Shotts 1:1.77

These ratios exclude former members of the chief prison officer grade who became members of the unified prison service grades on 1 June 1987. Comparison between these and previously published ratios is therefore inappropriate.

Mr. McTaggart
