HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 cc210-1W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his reply of 22 October,Official Report, column 842, if he will give details of (a) the number of matches covered for each club in season 1987–88 to date, (b) the average charge per 1.000 spectators and (c) the criteria adopted by the Metropolitan police when deciding the number of officers who should attend a particular match.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that for the charges set out in my reply of 22 October the information requested is as follows:

Season 1987–88
Club Number of matches charged Number of matches paid
Arsenal 4 4
Brentford 7 4
Charlton 6 6
Chelsea 8 5

Season 1987–88
Club Number of matches charged Number of matches paid
Crystal Palace 7 5
Fulham 9 5
Leyton Orient 10 7
Millwall 7 6
Queen's Park Rangers 6 6
Tottenham Hotspur 7 4
West Ham United 8 5
Wimbledon 7 4

The number of officers to be deployed within each ground is the subject of discussion between the club and the local chief superintendent prior to the start of the season and is based on operational experience. The method of determining manning levels on the basis of one police constable per 1,000 spectators with corresponding supervision is no longer used and the average charge per 1,000 spectators is therefore not readily available.
