To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the current day-to-day bed capacity of hospitals in the whole of the United Kingdom.

I am sorry that I cannot give the hon. Member all the information he seeks in precisely the form requested. The average daily number of available beds in National Health Service hospitals in England during 1986 was 315,714. Figures for the rest of the United Kingdom are a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales and Northern Ireland.
