HC Deb 09 November 1987 vol 122 c11W
Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what amounts of nuclear waste were discharged into the Irish sea from Sellafield nuclear power station in the periods 1960 to 1970, 1970 to 1980 and 1980 to 1985.

Mr. Moynihan

The liquid effluent arising from Calder Hall nuclear power station forms part of the Sellafield site effluent which is collected in tanks for analysis prior to discharge to the Irish sea. Although analysis is carried out at source, the relevant information on activities discharged is obtained on the collection tanks as a whole.

Information for the period 1960–1985 is shown graphically in the figures shown in the report by Sir Douglas Black on "The Investigation of the Possible Increased Incidence of Cancer in West Cumbria" published by HMSO in 1985. Further information on the discharges from the site for the period 1972–1985 is available from the British Nuclear Fuel annual reports on radioactive discharges.
