HC Deb 09 November 1987 vol 122 c25W
Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list the numbers of nuclear inspectors per reactor in the United Kingdom, West Germany, France, Sweden, Belgium, Italy and Spain.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I am advised by the Health and Safety Executive that in the United Kingdom approximately 80 nuclear installations inspectors deal with 41 licensed commercial power reactors under construction and in operation, and five small research reactors. The number of inspectors assigned to any one reactor is decided on a basis of need.

Figures for overseas countries are not available and can be acquired only at disproportionate cost. The United Kingdom, however, has been instrumental in bringing about an IAEA review of regulatory practices in member states.
