HC Deb 09 November 1987 vol 122 cc25-6W
Mr. Favell

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what information he has as to how manning levels in the electricity supply industry in England and Wales compare with those of other European Economic Community countries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Some information is available from annual reports of electricity utilities. But comparisons are not straightforward because of the different ranges of activities undertaken and the extent of use of contractors.

Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy how much of the new electricity capacity planned for by the end of the century is to replace existing capacity.

Mr. Michael Spicer

This is a matter which falls within the management responsibility of the Central Electricity Generating Board and I have asked the chairman to write to the hon. Member. The need to replace existing capacity and the growth in electricity demand result in a requirement for substantial investment in new generating capacity in the years ahead.

Mr. Barron

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what plans have been made for the modernisation of the electricity transmission system; and how much money is allocated to this.

Mr. Michael Spicer

This is a matter which falls within the management responsibility of the Central Electricity Generating Board. I have asked the chairman to write to the hon. Member.
