To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many civilians are employed by his Department in(a) the United Kingdom, (b) Wales and (c) Clwyd. how many civilians are active in his Department's establishments in (a) the United Kingdom, (b) Wales and (c) Clwyd as contract cleaners; and if he will make a statement.

The total number of full-time equivalent civilian staff, excluding casual staff, employed by the Ministry of Defence on 1 October 1987 was 145,910 of whom 140,524 were based in the United Kingdom. Of these 5,947 were based in Wales and 1,236 in Clwyd.

The information requested on contract cleaners is not available; the numbers employed by the contractors concerned is their responsibility.
