10. Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications he is currently considering from police forces in England and Wales requesting an increase in their establishment.

Mr. Hurd

Nineteen police authorities in England and Wales have asked me to approve increases totalling 737 in their establishments in this financial year. I shall be taking decisions on these applications in the light of advice from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary.

48. Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what discussions he has had with chief constables about further increases in constabulary police establishments.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Police establishment matters are often discussed with chief constables during visits to police forces and on other occasions.
