HC Deb 05 November 1987 vol 121 cc815-6W
17. Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consultations he has had over proposed legislation to compound further the possession of knives.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

During our recent study of the law relating to the possession of knives, we consulted chief officers of police and some trading interests. We also took account of the views of right hon. and hon. Members, other police officers and the public.

24. Mr. Flynn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what response he has received to his proposals to control the carrying and possession of knives and other offensive weapons.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The Government's proposals to strengthen the law on carrying knives in public and to take powers to prohibit the manufacture, sale and importation of specified offensive weapons for which there is no legitimate use seem to have been well received generally.
