HC Deb 05 November 1987 vol 121 c808W
Ms. Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has as to which local education authorities are currently offering less favourable treatment to girls in the provision of grammar schools; and if he will give the names of grammar schools in each local education authority concerned as well as the number of places offered to (i) girls and (ii) boys in each of the schools mentioned.

Mr. Dunn

No information is available centrally as to the number of places offered for entry to grammar schools. There were 28 local education authorities in England in January 1987 that had grammar schools of which only Birmingham LEA had more boys' grammar schools than girls'. The number of grammar schools in Birmingham LEA was eight, of which five were boys' schools and three were girls' schools as follows:

  • Sutton Coldfield Girls' School
  • Handsworth Grammar School for Boys
  • Kind Edward VI Aston School
  • King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys
  • King Edward VI Camp Hill Girls' School
  • King Edward VI Five Ways School
  • King Edward VI Handsworth
  • Bishop Veseys Grammar School
