HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 cc782-3W
Mr. William Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what information he has to the number of dwellings which were flooded in each council area in Northern Ireland due to the exceptional rainfall on 21 October.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 2 November 1987]: Flooding of dwellings was confined mainly to the west and north-west of the Province. Details of reported major incidents of flooding are as follows:

District Dwellings
Strabane 300
Omagh 84
Fermanagh 52
Craigavon 35
Coleraine 28
Banbridge 24
Armagh 16
Limavady 13

Precise numbers of flooded dwellings in other council districts are not known but are probably in single figures.

Mr. William Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he expects the repairs to the banking system on the River Roe which are necessary as a result of flood damage on 21 October to be completed; and what is his estimate of the cost.

Mr. Viggers

[holding answer 3 November 1987]: Repairs to the flood bank on the River Roe have already started. Progress will depend on weather conditions and the work is likely to take up to six months to complete. Its estimated costs is £120,000.
