asked the Secretary of State for Transport which airports have received financial assistance from Her Majesty"s Government in each of the last three years; in what form; and what was the value of the assistance in each case.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what financial assistance is available for airports accepting scheduled or non-scheduled traffic from (a) Her Majesty's Government and (b) the European Economic Community; and what criteria are used in determining elegibility for such assistance.

Government financial assistance is not generally available, but some airports might be eligible for consideration under the following specific schemes:

  1. (a) Urban programme grants. Available for inner city projects within designated areas to tackle problems of unemployment and social need.
  2. (b) Security grants. Northern Ireland only. Compensation for additional security measures provided at Belfast international (Aldergrove).
  3. (c) Scottish Development Department assistance to Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd. (a subsidiary of the Civil Aviation Authority) in respect of losses incurred at its eight aerodromes (Benbecula, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree and Wick).

  5. (d) European regional development fund. Available to projects in assisted areas designated by the Department of Trade and Industry, or serving an assisted area in such a way as to assist in the regeneration of its economy.
