§ Mr. Michael Morrisasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what liaison there is between his Department, local educational authorities and the Sports Council over the promotion of team sport in schools; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what inquiries are currently being undertaken by his Department concerning the promotion of sports in school.
§ Mr. MoynihanIn November 1986 the Department of the Environment and the Department of Education and Science convened a seminar to exchange views about sport in schools, including team sports, to inform Government, sporting bodies and educational interests. Since the seminar, a new forum led by the Sports Council with representatives from local authorities, sports governing bodies and educational bodies has been set up to study issues, recommend courses of action and report by 1 January 1988. The DOE and DES jointly funded a review of research and information on school sport which was completed in May last.
