HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 cc521-2W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what applications have been or are being considered for a daily scheduled air service between Manchester and New York; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

British Airways applied for and was granted a licence by the Civil Aviation Authority to operate between Manchester and New York some years ago. It inaugurated its service in 1985. No other applications are currently before the CAA or the Department of Transport.

American Airlines and Pan American World Airways have recently applied to the United States Department of Transportation for permission to operate between New York and Manchester. As stated in the Airports Policy White Paper (Cmnd. 9542), we remain willing to negotiate with the United States Government the basis on which United States airlines should have access to Manchester.
