HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 c524W
14. Mr. Lofthouse

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he has any plans to conduct a comprehensive review of safety at nuclear power stations.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Safety at new nuclear power stations is under continuous review. The operators of nuclear power stations have a statutory responsibility for the safety of their plant. In addition, they must meet the stringent licence requirements of the NII.

22. Mr. Loyden

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what steps he is taking to improve the security and safety of nuclear power stations in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Parkinson

The security and safety of nuclear power stations are the responsibility of the operators concerned and these are continually reviewed. The independent Nuclear Installations Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive ensures that operators satisfy its stringent licence terms and conditions.

Ms. Ruddock

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what developments there have been between the nuclear installations inspectorate and the Central Electricity Generating Board on the question of the long-term safety review at Bradwell nuclear power station; and if the Central Electricity Generating Board have satisfied the nuclear installations inspectorate on the submissions it has made to them on the issue of the pressure circuit integrity.

Mr. Michael Spicer

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Leyton (Mr. Cohen) on 29 October.
