HC Deb 02 November 1987 vol 121 c600W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will estimate the number of nuclear (i) missiles, (ii) warheads and (iii) throw-weight for NATO forces (a) worldwide, (b) in Europe and (c) in the United Kingdom: (A) in June 1979, (B) now and (C) after implementation of the provisions of the current intermediate nuclear force negotiations.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Information on the number and location of nuclear missiles deployed with NATO forces has been published annually in the "Statement on the Defence Estimates" since 1980.

The information which the hon. Member is seeking on warheads and throw-weight is classified.

Under the currently proposed INF agreement, all NATO's ground-launched cruise missiles and Pershing II missiles would be eliminated.

Following an INF agreement, it will remain NATO's policy to maintian the minimum level of forces consistent with credible deterrence.
