§ Mr. Simon Hughesasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the latest figures for annual emissions of ammonia in the United Kingdom; and what has been the trend in emission levels since 1960.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe university of Utrecht calculated that annual emissions of ammonia in the United Kingdom in 1982(from animals, fertilisers and industry) were of the order of 405,000 tonnes. A similar study undertaken by Imperial college, London in 1980 calculated that there had been a slow increase in emissions of ammonia arising from livestock (which make up some 80 per cent, of total national emissions) from 321,000 tonnes in 1960, through 336,000 tonnes in 1970 to 366,000 tonnes in 1980.
