HL Deb 18 March 1987 vol 485 cc1508-9WA
Baroness Ewart-Biggs

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What progress has been made in implementing improvements in C1 Unit at Holloway prison and in establishing a new purpose-built unit.

The Earl of Caithness

Work has now been completed on the physical improvements to C1 Unit. These involve modifications to 10 cells on the unit, the installation of a protected room, and improvements to facilities and accommodation for staff. An association area and day room has been constructed and has been in use since Christmas; it has provided greater opportunities for association and out-of-cell activities. Instructors from the Skills Training Unit hold sessions on C1 for those women unable to leave the Unit. C1 staff training has been supplemented with special multi-disciplinary one-week courses, with others planned.

Planning for a new purpose-built unit to replace C1 (to be called the El hospital annex) continues. Initial design plans are now being drawn up.
