§ 48. Mr. Tony Banksasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his assessment of the implications for the possibility of a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Central America of the supply of arms to the Contra forces in Nicaragua.
§ Mr. EggarWe do not believe the problems of the region can be resolved by armed force and have constantly urged restraint on all sides. We have clearly demonstrated our support for a political solution to the problems of Central America on the basis of the Contadora objectives. Our actions have been, and will remain, consistent with that policy.
