Mr. Lawler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the latest figure for the number of persons arriving from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh who have been refused entry to the United Kingdom since the visa requirement was introduced; and if he will indicate where possible the reason for refusal, and how many were in possession of a valid visa.

The available information given in the table for the period 15 October 1986 to 7 March 1987, relates to passengers who arrived and were refused entry at Heathrow and Gatwick airports in that period.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total cost to public funds on removal of persons from the United Kingdom after they have been refused entry and for other reasons to date in the current financial year; and what was the figure for 1985–86.

Mr. Waddington

The direct cost to public funds of removing illegal entrants, deportees and persons refused leave to enter in the current financial year (ie to the end of February) was £1,001,959. The figure for the financial year 1985–86 was £873,812.
