HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 cc13-4W
Mr. Greenway

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if, when he next meets the chairman of London is through the medium of Welsh. These figures are given in the table. Comparable data on pupil numbers receiving instruction through the medium of Welsh is not available for secondary schools.

Regional Transport, he will discuss with him progress in introducing a totally automated ticketing system for the London underground; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

My Department received regular progress reports on the Underground ticketing system. These indicate that the project will be completed by the end of next year, on time and within the approved budget of £135 million (end 1984 prices). Full replacement of ticket machines throughout the network will speed up ticket issue and reduce queueing, as well as improving staff security and accounting facilities. Automatic ticket-checking gates in the central area will further reduce costs and fraud. The investment will make a substantial contribution to creating a modern and efficient railway in the capital.
