64. Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Minister for the Arts what is his estimate of total current expenditure on the arts.

Mr. Luce

The 1986–87 provision for total expenditure by central and local government on the arts programme is £804 million. An analysis of this provision was included in the White Paper on Public Expenditure published on 14 January (Cm 56). The figure for local authorities includes libraries and museums, but not all their other expenditure on the arts.
