HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c24W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what response he has sent to the chairman of the Engineering Council about the need for more university places for engineering students.

Mr. Walden

My right hon. Friend met the chairman and senior officials of the Engineering Council last Wednesday. He agreed with them that there was a case for increasing the availability of manufacturing systems engineering courses in higher education, subject to satisfactory industrial support, particularly in the form of more student sponsorships and training placements. My right hon. Friend will be discussing the possibilities with the higher education planning bodies.
