HC Deb 09 March 1987 vol 112 c45W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Britain's bilateral aid programme to Central America.

Mr. Eggar

British aid to the five Central American Republics, Belize and Panama in 1985, the latest year for which figures are available, amounted to £22,337,000. A total of £16,701,000 of this consisted of investments by the Commonwealth Development Corporation. The balance was spent on training and technical co-operation, mainly in the natural resources sector; on assistance to displaced persons; and on programmes of financial aid to Belize and Honduras, in particular for roads, bridges and water supplies. We also support small development projects co-financed with British Voluntary Agencies in Central America.
