Mr. Eastham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what net savings will result in the financial years 1986–87 and 1987–88 from the implementation of the Social Security Act 1986.

Mr. Major

The effect of implementing the Social Security Act 1986 will be to increase benefit expenditure slightly in 1986–87 and to save some £75 million in benefit expenditure in 1987–88.
