HC Deb 04 March 1987 vol 111 c620W
Mr. Wrigglesworth

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will introduce legislation obliging education authorities to pay for medical services such as speech therapy and physiotherapy for children who are handicapped or have special needs.

Mrs. Currie

The Government have no plans to introduce such legislation. At the time of local government and National Health Service reorganisation in 1974 the principle was firmly established that medical services would generally be provided by health authorities. This principle was reaffirmed in the Education Act 1981.
