Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received concerning the future of the telephone exchange for the deaf.

We have received representations from the Royal National Institute for the Deaf and from five hon. and right hon. Members.

Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if his Department will provide the resources to guarantee the future of the Royal National Institute for the Dears telephone exchange for the deaf; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will consider revenue funding for the telephone exchange for the deaf run by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

Mr. Scott

The Manpower Services Commission is at present providing staffing assistance for the exchange through the community programme, and equipment has been provided by British Telecom. We are considering representations from the Royal National Institute for the Deaf about the long-term future of the project.
