HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c713W
Sir Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the incidence of psittacosis in Cambridgeshire in comparison with the rest of Britain; if he will approve at the earliest opportunity the order of the South Cambridgeshire district council making psittacosis a notifiable disease under section 16 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

[pursuant to her reply, 22 July 1987]: We do not collect comprehensive statistics about the incidence of this disease which would allow this comparison to be made. I understand that laboratory reports sent to the communicable disease surveillance centre in recent years were as follows:

Number
1984 410
1985 322
1986 1329
1 Provisional.

My officials are in touch with South and East Cambridgeshire district councils which are I understand concerned about local incidence. A decision about the approval of an order to make this disease notifiable in their areas will be taken as soon as possible.
