HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c704W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what assurances or information were given which led to his Department's inspectorate excluding Nye Bevan lodge from its investigation into residential care in Southwark;

(2) what information he has about the inquiries conducted by Southwark council into Nye Bevan lodge in Southwark, referred to in his answer by the then Minister of State, the hon. Member for Oxford, West and Abingdon (Mr. Patten) on 17 June 1985, Official Report, column 56.

Mrs. Currie

At the time the SSI inspection was agreed in July 1985 the local authority had before it a report from the acting officer in charge at Nye Bevan lodge. In the light of this report the Social Services Committee decided to set up a formal management inquiry. It was in that knowledge that the decision was made to set up an investigation by the Department's inspectorate into the authority's other homes. The report of the inspectorate was presented to Southwark Social Services Committee on 6 January 1986.
