HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c729W
Mr. Michael J. Martin

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what funds he has made available to the National Trust for the upkeep of historical buildings during the years 1983–84, 1984–85 and 1985–86.

Mr. Moynihan

The National Trust has received grants from the Department—prior to 1 April 1984—from the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission and from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. The figures are summarised in the table below, which covers trust properties in England.

The major part of the NHMF payments relates to two major country houses — Calke Abbey, which the Government accepted in lieu of tax and allocated to the care of the trust, with endowment and repair funds channelled through the NHMF; and Belton House.

Some NHMF grants relate to gardens or land; a detailed breakdown is not possible in the time available.
