HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c611W
Mr. Rowlands

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many applications have been received for the re-registration of foreign ships as British ships during the last five years; and in which countries those ships were originally registered.

Mr. David Mitchell

The number of ships of over 100 gross registered tons which were entered on the United Kingdom register under part I of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 and which were previously on foreign registers was as follows:

  • in 1986–75 ships from 23 different foreign registers
  • in 1987 so far 37 ships from 18 different foreign registers

Information for earlier years and for the Crown dependencies and dependent territories could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
