HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c607W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what reports he has received from the Chief Inspector of Railways concerning proposals to extend one person operation to deep-tube railways in London.

Mr. David Mitchell

London Underground Ltd. has developed plans for the extension of one-person operation to their deep-tube railways. These plans have been shown and demonstrated to the Railway Inspectorate, which is satisfied that they will provide a proper level of safety. The Secretary of State is not required to approve formally the method of operation of London Underground's trains; this is a matter for the railways' management which is responsible for the safe day-to-day operation of its railways.
